IGN Gives Scarface (Wii) an 8.5/10

scarface.jpgMany have automatically dismissed any ports that come to the Wii, but it looks as if Scarface: The World is Yours may be different. IGN’s Mark Bozon and Chris Roper have given the game an 8.5/10, a very respectable score.

Here are their closing comments:

“Scarface: The World is Yours was an impressive game on previous consoles, and it’s just as entertaining and immersive on Wii as ever before. IR control gives the game a more streamlined feel, and Wii owners that fit in the hardcore crowd will absolutely eat this one up, as it’s currently one of the deepest and most entertaining experiences on the system. And while the package is essentially GTA: Vice City with the Scarface license coated over it, we’ve actually had more fun exploring Miami than Vice City, as there’s more to do, better vehicle, weapon, and asset management, and nearly every hotspot from the movie is created brick for brick. When you explore Montana’s mansion, you’re in the mansion from the movie. When you head over to the beach-side club, the bartender recognizes you from the beginning of the first movie (the oh-so-famous “lizard tongue” scene, to be exact). Everything in Scarface fits with the movie, and while it suffers from the same open-world issues as GTA and the like – characters and items fade in, AI isn’t always the sharpest, and the world has a somewhat “unpolished” look to it – the control, immersion, and overall soul of the game is there. Scarface is a deep, engaging, mature title on Wii, and widely recommended to anyone who can handle its vulgar nature. Vice City, eat your heart out.”

Resident Evil 4 Will Not Be Censored!

Numerous reports have been coming in saying that Resident Evil 4 for the Nintendo Wii would be censored. The reports come after an article by Next-Gen.biz.

“…a great portion of the blood and gore has been excised from the game. Headshots no longer kill, limbs can no longer be shot off.”

However, we now have official word from Capcom saying that the game will definitely not be censored in the US version. The users in Japan are not so lucky. Their version will be censored.

“RE 4 Wii Edition content in Japan is based on their previous releases, the US version content will be similar to previous releases here (not talking about any of the Wii Edition functions with the controls of course, just about gameplay content).” -Capcom

I think we can all agree that censorship in games degrades the art form, and most of all, RE 4 should be an awesome game!

Wii Hard Drive to Be Announced at E3?

According to a recurrent rumor, a hard drive attachment may be announced at this year’s E3. Many have wanted an external hard drive for quite some time now, and I know that I, myself, have been getting quite worried of what was to happen when the demos, VC games, and game saves fills up the internal 512MB!

What would really be cool is if Nintendo would allow us to download a firmware update which would allow us to attach any USB 2.0 external hard drive. This would be a great solution since many people already have one.

This latest tip comes from an IGN podcast that hints at the E3 announcement. Keep your eyes peeled for the latest!

Wii: New Madden ‘08 Details

According to an article posted on GameWad.com, the Wii version of Madden ‘08 will be getting some nice features that take advantage of the Wii’s capabilities. As we know, Madden ‘07 was fairly well received on the Wii and was enjoyed by many.

madden.jpg

Along with updated gameplay, and enhanced controls, here are some things to expect in the next version:

  • Real-time ESPN ticker updates
  • Online tournaments
  • Worldwide quickplay multiplayer matches
  • Promised roster updates not just for the 2008 season, but 2009 as well
  • Mini-game party mode, with 22 mini-games
  • Miis are used in minigames

Although many of those features seem to be not very new, one thing that is worth noting is that it will definitely support online play on the Wii, something that we all want. The only thing that seems to be nagging at me is the hint of game-specific friend codes. Although we have heard some rumors about what Nintendo is planning, we’ll have to wait and just hope they make the right decision (no game-specific codes!).

Could Wii Friend Codes Actually Be Mii-Specific?

mario-strikers.jpgAccording to our friends at The Tanooki, Nintendo may plan on using individual Mii’s to generate friend codes for your online games. Now, this could be a great thing, or a very bad thing. Let’s look at the two options. If Nintendo allows us to create a specific friend code for each Mii, and lets us use that code/Mii across all games, that would be awesome since the Mii would act as sort of a screen name.

From The Tanooki:
“When you go online in Mario Strikers Charged, for example, we know you choose a Mii to represent yourself online. The Friend Code that is then generated is based on that Mii. What does that mean? It means that assuming you use the same Mii to represent yourself online in every other future Wii game that uses it, you’ll have the same Friend Code. It’s almost like your Mii has a screenname.”

On the other hand, if Nintendo is planning to make us generate a new, Mii friend code for each game, now that would just be bogus. They have already taken it quite too far by using friend codes in the first place, and I hope to God that they are not planning to take this second route. I would be ok with the Mii “usernames”, but anything that requires multiple friend codes is sure to be…let’s just say not easy.

Wii: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Trailer

IGN has posted the first trailer of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers for the Nintendo Wii. The graphics do look somewhat better than the current Wii games, but nothing like what they should be at by now. On a better note, the game does look to be a promising title, just like its predecessor. The trailer is quite short, but does show some things that can be expected. Take a look:

List of Promising Wii Games

Infendo.com has posted a great little article about the promising Wii games that are expected to come out in the future. Many have speculated that the Wii will not have decent games due to the current game drought. However, that is bound to change. It just begins with this list (courtesy of Infendo):

  • Geometry Wars: Galaxies (Wii/DS) coming this fall. It features an all new campaign mode not to mention both original versions of Retro Evolved like on Xbox Live.
  • Dewy’s Adventure (Wii). From the maker’s of Elebits (awesome game) comes an action-adventure title that looks cute (did I just say that) and fun. Coming fall this year.
  • Harry Potter (Wii). Okay, this may be a stretch, but the reason it caught my eye is that its heavy on wandage, and EA is making it. Yes, EA has been delivering the gameplay goods in my book, so this title could be worth your time. Probably not a must by, but a fun little title none-the-less me thinks. Coming next month.
  • Resident Evils: Umbrella Chronicles and RE4 (Wii). This month’s cover story only has good things to say about the two new REs hitting Wii this year. Chronicles this fall, and RE4 next month. Despite the former being an on-rails shooter, you’ll still be able to move the camera around using the analog stick and team NP ranked the game high on the fun-o-meter. Same goes for RE4 Wii.
  • Mario Party 8 (Wii). Nintendo Power only gives the game a 7.5/10, but say it’s yet another great party game for the platform. Personally, I think I’m done with party games at the moment, but I’ll definitely rent this mug. Coming next month.
  • Madden NFL 08 (Wii). Hitting Wii in August, Madden on Wii will feature ALL online content as its more powerful comrade consoles. That’s right, NP says EA is dumping everything in this version with still more attention on the motion-controls. Having loved last year’s Madden on Wii, I think I’m starting to become a fan again, and it’s looking like this version could be the one to have for all Madden fans; motion controls, online, the works. Good stuff.
  • Mario Strikers (Wii). The first online game coming next month. I’ve said it before and NP echoes the same; the game looks to be a riot.
  • The Bigs (Wii). Ever since first playing Wii Sports Baseball, I’ve been itching for a full on game. This could be it. Like Madden above, it sounds like 2K is putting in a lot of effort to give the Wii version its rightful cachet. You’ll run the bases by shaking the Wii remote and nunchuk alternately in a drumming motion, then flick them both down at the same time to slide all while using the analog stick for direction (same for fielding too). Sounds like a really fun and smart implementation of motion-controls. Coming next-month.
  • Legends of the Indy 500 (Wii). I don’t know how this could be more fun than my beloved Excite Truck, but NP lauded the graphics. Indeed, this was one of the prettiest titles showcased in the mag and it’s coming this fall as well.
  • Fifa Soccer 08 (Wii). If there was one genre I thought wouldn’t benefit from motion-controls, it was simulation soccer. What could developers really do; ask you to tape nunchuks and Wiimotes to your feet? But again EA seems like they could prove me wrong using nunchuk and wiimote jukes for tackling, getting past defenders, lobbing the ball, passing it, etc. Sounds fun and is also coming this fall.
  • No More Heroes (Wii). Action-adventure game from the creator of Killer 7. Coming to Wii this fall.

I think that there are other, numerous games, that should be on this list. What do you guys think?
